Kiln Carving with glass fusing - adding relief and texture to your glass fusing designs, for beginners and those with some glass fusing experience.

This is a 4hour workshop and usually runs on a Saturday or public holiday.

On this workshop you'll discover how to create beautiful, textured fused glass art, combining colours and deep relief, achieved with kiln-proof fibre paper.
If you've experienced glass fusing on one of our beginner's classes, this is a great next step for your new fused glass artistic development!

Kiln-carving involves cutting shapes and areas out of special fibre material which the glass will slump in to when fired in the kiln. These shapes can be designed like a piece of stencil or printed art - they could be numbers, letters, words or symbols, natural shapes - any shape you can cut from the material.

We'll ask you to do some research, and if possible, some design sketches before the class so you'll get maximum benefit from your time with us. We'll provide guidance on this, if needed.

Your end piece(s) on this class will start out as two 30cm squares of clear fusible glass - forming a top and bottom layer. If you wish to make multiple smaller pieces from these we'll teach you how to cut your glass to size.

After transferring tour design to the fibre materials you'll use a scalpel to cut sections out of the material to create the areas of relief in your end design. You can add coloured glass frit at this stage, as seen in the examples to the right.

Once your piece is ready for the kiln, we'll fire it and let you know when it's ready for collection.
